Community Allocation: Airdrops, Points, and Retroactive Rewards
Community allocation is often the most debated line item in a Solana tokenomics spreadsheet. Early testers, Discord moderators, NFT holders, and liquidity providers all expect recognition — but total supply is fixed. How you measure contribution before TGE shapes both fairness perception and sybil resistance.
Snapshot airdrops
Snapshot airdrops allocate tokens based on wallet activity at a specific block height. They reward provable on-chain behavior: holding an NFT, interacting with a program, or providing liquidity above a threshold. Snapshots are transparent but gameable if criteria leak early. Announce eligibility categories before the snapshot date, never the exact block.
Points systems
Points accrue over weeks or months based on tasks: testnet usage, bug reports, content creation, referral links. Points convert to tokens at TGE using a published formula. This rewards sustained contribution but requires anti-sybil measures — device fingerprinting, manual review for top accounts, or minimum tenure requirements. Points systems work well for products still in beta without meaningful on-chain history.
Retroactive rewards
Retroactive models allocate tokens to users who interacted with a protocol before a token existed — common in DeFi. They honor early risk-takers but create forensic work: defining the interaction set, excluding wash trading, and handling contracts vs. EOAs. Budget engineering time for allocation script audits.
Allocation size guidance
Community tranches on recent Solana launches typically range from 15% to 35% of total supply, depending on whether the project had a private raise. Larger community allocations often pair with longer vesting for non-liquid portions. Liquid airdrop portions above 10% at TGE deserve explicit justification in public docs.
Communication expectations
Publish how disputes are handled before claims open. Name a support channel and response SLA. Ambiguous eligibility rules generate more discord volume than modest allocation sizes with clear criteria.
